This is an ideal career for creative thinkers. An actor is somebody who will play the role of different characters in a range of different productions, from television to films, radio, advertising and theatre.

Education Qualifications

There are no formal requirements to becoming an actor, as you can obtain work without these. There are courses available for you to gain some formal training, although this may not increase your chance of obtaining employment. It will, however, give you more confidence and greater skills. Many universities will offer courses with many differing entry requirements. Leading universities such as Melbourne University, Bachelor of Dramatic Art – which is a 3 year full time course, Griffith University Bachelor of Arts in Applied Theatre – 3 years full time and Monash University Bachelor of Performing Arts – 3 years full time or 6 years part time,  have courses on offer for you.

If you were to choose a degree course in acting you will need to attend an audition or workshop, and have passed your VCE with English. There may also be an interview that you will have to attend. As there are many courses available through university, they will all have different prerequisites for entry.

We suggest you check with the relevant university of interest to you in regards to your course choices and prerequisites needed for entry.

Relevant Universities Colleges & TAFE

We have only focussed on the core single degree and its full time period. We acknowledge many combination degrees are available and different students combine different degrees. Course names also differ by university and we have grouped like courses together. We may have missed the odd course being offered, so we recommend for a more detailed guide check with the universities direct or one of the university course guide books such as Hobson’s.
