Practitioners accredited in acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine with the Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association (AACMA) must first pass stringent entry requirements and are bound by a professional Code of Ethics and contemporary standards of health care practice. The usual pathway is an accredited four year fulltime degree course. AACMA recognizes the following degree courses in Victoria RMIT: Bachelor of Applied Science (Acupuncture), Southern School of Natural Therapies: Bachelor of Health Science (Chinese Medicine) and Endeavour College of Natural Health: Bachelor of Health Science (Acupuncture). In Sydney Bachelor of Health Science courses are offered at University of Western Sydney and University of Technology Sydney.
An alternative is a post graduate qualification also recognised by the AACMA or similar institute. Practitioners are required to undertake professional development annually, in the form of further education, workshops, seminars and conferences.
