Career Advice - Baker Career

What you do every day

Each day you mix dough by hand or by machine ready to be put into the baking tins or trays. Once the dough is mixed you will check that the oven temperature is correct and once the bread is in the oven you keep an eye on the appearance of the bread, making sure not to overcook it.

Once all the bread is cooked you will unload the ovens and put the breads aside to cool. If pastries and cakes are cooked you will have to glaze and ice them where necessary. When you have the required experience you may order the supplies needed from suppliers and wholesalers. At times you may be required to serve customers.

Personality that best fits this career

To be a baker you must enjoy the idea of practical work, be creative in your thinking, have good hand/eye coordination and be physically fit. Your personal presentation and hygiene must be of the highest standard.

Best thing about this career

Being a baker you will get the opportunity to meet a variety of different people on a daily basis. If you are working in a small bakery you will have a steady flow of customers, some of whom will become regular clients that you see on a daily basis.

As you will have very early start times you may also have the opportunity to be able to finish your working day at an earlier hour, thus giving you some time to enjoy your days.

Worst thing about this career

Unfortunately bakers begin their work day at a very early hour, usually around 3.00 am. You will probably have to work weekends and public holidays, as these are some of the times that would be the busiest for the bakery. Your social life may have to come second to your career at times due to your early start times.
