Qualifications, Leading Universities and Employment
Journalism involves telling a detailed and factual story to the public. To succeed in either broadcast or print journalism, you need to have a love for writing and confidence in public speaking. Desirable pre-requisite subjects include English, Communications and Media.
You will need to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or Communications, which are usually three year courses. Over 75 campuses offer courses in this field. The toughest courses to gain admission to are those offered by Sydney University and University of Technology Sydney in NSW. In order to gain entrance to these two universities, a Victorian Enter score of 85+ is required.
The broadcast journalism program requires a strong liberal arts background, combined with specialised journalism classes in writing, media and production, as well as psychology and economics. The undergraduate degree covers important subject material but finding employment after graduation is not easy. Jobs in the news media are scarce, so getting work experience and industry involvement beforehand is strongly recommended. Contacts are everything. You must also be able to demonstrate outstanding writing skills. Be aggressive about getting work published in school newspapers or local media; seek work experience with a small newspaper publisher and prepare a comprehensive portfolio to showcase your talent. You may also find it beneficial to widen your background by taking additional subjects such as foreign affairs, or contemporary studies.
