Education & Qualifications
If you are interested in becoming an editor, there are a few qualifications that can get you in the door. Depending on which area of editing you are interested in, you should either consider a communications course, for newspaper and magazine editorial information, or a creative arts course, for more generalised editing, such as book editing.
Universities offering courses specifically in Editing are: Monash University with a Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing which is offered as a dual award program with the Bachelor of Communications; RMIT University with a Certificate IV and Diploma in Professional Writing and Editing. Otherwise, consider a Bachelor of Arts (Journalism), Bachelor of Arts (Professional Writing/Professional and Creative Writing), or Bachelor of Arts (Media and Communication).
Those universities whose creative arts and communication course command the highest entry score of 85+ are Griffith University in Queensland, University of Technology Sydney, and RMIT University in Victoria. Other universities to consider in terms of Journalism and Professional Writing are: University of Ballarat, Victoria University and Deakin University in Victoria, , Queensland University, Queensland University of Technology and James Cook University in Queensland; Macquarie University, University of Western Sydney, and Wollongong University in New South Wales.

Experience will be regarded positively when searching for a job. Consider an internship at a publishing house or newspaper/magazine to give you relevant experience, and to improve your chances at future employment, keeping in mind these are extremely difficult to obtain as places are very limited. Volunteer work is also a great way to gain experience and make contacts. You need to get your foot in someone’s door.
The entry criteria for tertiary institiutions differs from year to year. The above comments are a guide only. To gain specific entry criteria either contact the relevant university or use Hobson's The Good University Guide.
