As an aspiring editor, you have the opportunity to work in a range of areas. The most common workplace is within the printing and publishing industries.
Newspapers are dominated by News Limited and Fairfax Newspapers in metropolitan areas, The Leader and Cumberland Groups for suburban press and Rural Press for country papers. Country newspapers are an excellent way to start your editorial career. The most well known newspapers are:
• Australia wide: The Australian which is published on weekdays and The Weekend Australian on Saturday.
• Sydney: The Sydney Morning Herald and Daily Telegraph are weekday morning papers. The Sun Herald and Sunday Telegraph are published on Sunday, while mX is a free weekday afternoon paper distributed in the central business district.
• Melbourne: The Age and The Herald Sun are published daily and the suburban Leader newspaper is published weekly. The Sunday Herald Sun and the Sunday Age are published on Sunday as their name suggests. mX is also published on weekday afternoons and distributed free in the city centre.
• All other capital cities have a newspaper published on weekdays and a Sunday paper
Magazines are dominated by Australian Consolidated Press (ACP) with over 80 magazine titles across 15 interest categories including women’s lifestyle (e.g. The Australian Women’s Weekly and Woman’s Day), sport, men’s health, home and leisure, money and business , teenage and food, wine and travel.
Magazine publications have numerous titles appealing to all age groups and interests. Then there are advertising companies, private companies, commercial printers, and any other workplace where material needs editing. You may also work freelance, most commonly as a proofreader, gaining temporary or contract employment.
Environment & Culture
For the most part, editors are based in offices, following a standard 8.30am to 5.30amwork day. However, you may be expected to leave the office to meet with writers, journalists, or to collect your own material. Due to the importance of sticking to deadlines in the publishing industry, longer hours are expected during high deadline periods.
Your office environment is fast paced, action orientated with a high degree of urgency. Decisions are made and deadlines expected to be met. Your environment is well-lit and comfortable, and you will carry out a lot of your work on computers, either in word processing or design programs.
