Education Qualifications
If you're considering an engineering career take English plus the highest level math and science courses you can while in secondary school such as calculus and physics. Irrespective of which form of engineering you are interested in, you will need to complete a Bachelor of Engineering in your chosen field. This is usually a four year course. Upon completion the top ranking students usually get invited to complete an Honors year. The employment demand for those graduate students is extremely high. A Master of Engineering is now considered a pre-requisite by many firms as is a PhD for those interested in lecturing or research.
Most of Australia’s universities offer the spectrum of engineering courses. The very toughest universities to gain entry to are University of New South Wales, University of Sydney, Monash University, Queensland University of Technology and Australian National University in Canberra. These institutions are the benchmark and require an entry score in the mid to high 90’s. Employers queue for first pick of their graduates.
Once qualified, membership of the Institution of Engineers Australia is an option available to you and membership of the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists & Managers Australia (APESMA) is recommended.
The entry criteria for tertiary institiutions differs from year to year. The above comments are a guide only. To gain specific entry criteria either contact the relevant university or use Hobson's The Good University Guide.
