This is an ideal career for analytical and logical thinkers. An environmental health officer develops enforces and manages laws and regulations regarding public health, building and environmental management. You are focused on community good health, hygiene and safe environmental practice.

Leading Companies & Markets

As an environmental health officer, you may work for private companies and organisations, but more commonly in the public sector with local, state and federal government authorities and departments.

If you live in Western Australia, a major employer of environmental health officers is the mining and quarantine inspection industry. If you live in Victoria, the main employer of Environmental Health Officers is local government.

As a graduate your employment future looks very positive. The expected population growth, the nationwide maintenance of hygiene and health and safety and food safety and security will be of great importance.

Environment & Culture of workplace

Although primarily office based you will spend time visiting premises. Therefore, your work can take you from construction sites, to places offering accommodation to companies that manufacture and sell food, to mortuaries and hospitals.

Travel is consequently an expected part of the job, and so a full driving licence is required. Overnight travel is unusual: however it may be necessary depending on your employer.

Considering the responsibility of your job, it may take you to dirty or disturbing workplaces. As an official representative, potentially of the government, you may also find that you are not given a warm welcome. There is a stigma regarding health and safety regulations, and this may cause your work to be unsociable and stressful.
