What you do every day
Primarily you study scripts to gain a personal and artistic interpretation of the story. You then work with the Producer, Director of Photography, Production Designer and Costume Designer to plan and agree on artistic elements of the production.
You then hold auditions and screen tests for actors and work with the actors in rehearsals. During production you direct the scene and work with the other crew members on the choice of shot, lighting and sound.
When filming has finished, you work with the Editor in post-production to ensure that the story elements flow and the creative elements look and sound correct.

A successful director must hold fantastic people skills, as it is your job to be able to relate to actors and express to them your wishes and vision for the role. You must also have a positive attitude, remain calm under pressure and be very committed to the work. It is important to be friendly and treat everyone with respect, as this will maintain contacts and ensure future work. Your excellance in creative thinking is paramount to the projects you work on.
Best thing about this career
The most rewarding thing about being a Director is seeing your artistic vision come to life. Working on productions can also give you valuable life experience by working with a variety of different people. Being a compassionate person can earn you respect and people will request to work with you again.
Worst thing about this career
If you wish to be a Director you must be prepared to work very long hours. Working on film sets in particular can take up to 12 hours a day. People are very often sleep deprived and tired, so it is important to get as much rest as possible. Also, a project may not work out the way you envisioned it and this can be a bit disheartening.
