This is an ideal career for analytical thinkers. As a financial planner, you devise and implement financial plans to ensure your clients make the best use of their savings, income and investments. Financial planners advise individuals, retirees and business owners on all areas of finance. These include risk management, pension plans, retirement, superannuation, cash flow management, education, investment strategies, insurance, business planning, real estate and tax.

Qualifications & Leading Universities

To be a qualified planner, you must complete an undergraduate degree, possibly followed by postgraduate studies. You would initially seek to enrol in a Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Business degree, majoring in financial planning or a finance-related discipline.

The most sought-after universities require an entry score of 85+ for a Bachelor of either Commerce or Business These include University of Melbourne, ANU, Monash University, University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, University of Technology, Sydney, and the University of Western Australia.

Some of these universities focus on general finance rather than providing a specific focus on financial planning. If you wish to complete a degree with a specialisation in financial planning, the following universities offer this course; the University of Canberra with a Bachelor of Commerce; in Queensland, Central Queensland University with a Bachelor of Financial Planning and Griffith University with a Bachelor of Commerce; in Western Australia, Curtin University of Technology with a Bachelor of Commerce; in Victoria, Deakin University with Bachelor of Commerce; and in NSW the University of Technology Sydney with a Bachelor of Business. Open Universities Australia offers a Bachelor of General Studies degree with emphasis on financial planning.

Practicing financial planners in Australia, will generally work for companies who are members of the Financial Planning Association. It provides clients with comfort and protection, as all members must abide by its code of ethics and rules of professional conduct.
