What you do every day
Fire fighters respond to emergency situations. They aid in the extinguishing of fires using fire hoses, extinguishers and spray foam, and may also aid in the dispersing of dangerous substances such as chemicals. A fire fighter can also aid in the rescue of people from remote and inaccessible places, administering first aid if needed.
As a fire fighter you will not always be working in an emergency situation. You will also be involved in activities to prevent fires, such as back burning. You will attend ongoing training courses in new techniques, fire demonstrations and fire drills. At times you may visit businesses to inspect their compliance with fire regulations including Sprinklers and fire hydrants, locations of entry and exit points and to point out any fire hazards that may be present.

Due to the nature of your career choice, you will at times be putting your own life in dangerous situations to help those in need, either from bush fires or rescues. You will be working a 10/14 shift system. This means you will work four days on duty and four days off duty. These consist of two 10 hour day shifts and two 14 hour night shifts. You may also be recalled for work when off duty.
