This is an ideal career for creative thinkers. Games developers are involved in the design, creation, and production of computer games, video games, handheld games, console games, arcade games, games for the Internet and mobile phones. The career title of games developer is very broad, and can include a number of roles including programmer, producer, project manager, animator and graphic artist, designer, sound technician, artificial intelligence specialist and quality assurance tester.

Education & Qualifications

If you are interested in becoming a games developer, consider which aspect you would be interested in pursuing. The qualifications to enter the career are quite varied.

You can commence an apprenticeship in Information Technology specialising in multimedia with an employer who may allow some initial training whilst you’re still at school. A Year 10 pass is the minimum educational requirement.

Various TAFE colleges offer certificate, diploma and advanced diploma courses in Information Technology majoring in multi media. If you did not pass Year12, you can enter the workforce now at a junior level or use the TAFE pass as credits for university admission.

You will benefit from gaining a degree in games design or programming. Relevant courses are three years fulltime and include Bachelor of Computer Science, Bachelor of Arts (major in Games Technology), Bachelor of Information Technology (major in Games Design and Development), Bachelor of Games Design, Bachelor of Interactive Entertainment, or a Bachelor of Games and Interactive Entertainment.

Universities that offer courses include:
New South Wales: Charles Sturt University, University of New England, University of Technology Sydney, and University of Wollongong
Victoria: Deakin University, Swinburne University of Technology, and RMIT University
Queensland: Griffith University, University of Technology Queensland, Central Queensland University
Western Australia: Edith Cowan University
