Qualifications and leading Universities
To commence a career in hairdressing you can start your training in years 10, 11or 12 as part of VET or VCAL programs. Completion of year 12 is an asset in gaining an Apprenticeship. The Salon workplace combined with the support of a Recognised Training Organisation over a period of 2 to 3 years, 1 day a week will provide the Apprentice with the knowledge and experience needed by today’s businesses.
All studies done under VET or VCAL programs are recognized once the Apprenticeship or Full Time training is commenced and credits are transferred to the Certificate III in Hairdressing.
Apprenticeship training is funded by the Australian Government. Apprenticeship wages paid on employment by a salon are available at the Australian Apprenticeships website.
The training progresses from Certificate II - pre apprenticeship course to Certificate III - qualified hairdresser to Certificate IV – Advanced Hairdresser and then onto the Diploma of Salon Management in Hairdressing.
Options of training to gain qualifications are either by Apprenticeships or Full Time Government Accredited Training programs. Both modes of training offer nationally recognized qualifications with both theory and practical experiences embedded into the training.
International students who meet the Australian Government criteria, can complete a Hairdressing course at a accredited College. This opens the door on completion to permanent employment if you choose to become a permanent resident.
Some pathways hairdressers may take are Hairdresser + Make-Up Artist, Hairdresser + Beautician, Spa Managers, Salon owners or work within the film, television and fashion industries.
The entry criteria for tertiary institutions differs from year to year. The above comments are a guide only. To gain specific entry criteria, contact the relevant university or use Hobson's The Good University Guide.
Relevant Universities Colleges & TAFE
Careernav have trolled through all the universities, specialist colleges and TAFE’s across the nation to identify those courses we consider relevant to this career. We have only focussed on the core single degree and its full time period. We acknowledge many combination degrees are available and different students combine different degrees. Course names also differ by university and we have grouped like courses together. We may have missed the odd course being offered, so we recommend for a more detailed guide check with the universities direct or one of the university course guide books such as Hobson’s.
