This is an ideal career for visionary thinkers. A hotel manager plans, supervises and controls personnel, finances, operations, and marketing activities of hotels and motels. You are responsible for the day-to-day operational management, and the planning, organising and directing of all hotel services, such as front-of-house, catering, concierge services and housekeeping.

Leading Companies & Markets

The hotel industry is highly fragmented with many of the international groups still having single digit market shares. In the Australian market some of the better known chains are;

•    Premium hotels: Marriott, Westin, Sheraton, Hilton, Hyatt, Intercontinental and Sofitel

•    Luxury hotels: Novotel, Radisson, Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza

•    Value hotels: Best Western, Mercure, Ibis, Travelodge

As a hotel manager, you can find work in hotels, motels, resorts, and other establishments that offer accommodation services.

Environment and Culture of the workplace

You will spend a considerable amount of your work time in an office, organising supplies and contracts, making guest bookings, writing plans and production reports, and continuously keeping track of the progress of your business. In terms of working hours, these can vary from week days, to include evening, weekend and holiday work.

Since guests arrive at any stage of day or night, you will not follow a 9-5 working hour day and could even be on call at any time. The atmosphere can be stressful at busy times of year, with high pressure to have everything under control all the time. It’s an office job, where a professional appearance is required. You have to deliver excellent customer service where nothing is a trouble, and then turn to the day to day management and the issues that guests bring.
