As an interior designer, you can find employment in a range of areas. Popular markets include design studios, departments of large stores or businesses, manufacturing firms, or design firms.
Interior designers may teach in schools, universities or other educational institutions, while some are employed by magazines on home furnishings and interior design. You may decide to branch out and open your own business, or simply opt for self-employment, and work on a freelance or contract basis.
Environment & Culture
You will work in an office environment, such as a studio, while also spending time on-site, where your workplace may range from a boutique store to an executive’s office, or from a private home to a television studio. You will spend much of your time consulting with clients, manufacturers, contractors, suppliers, and workers. Depending on your project, travel may be required.
The on-site environment may require you to take health and safety precautions, wearing a hard hat and protective equipment. In terms of uniform, the design industry is known for its creativity, and so you can dress expressively and uniquely on the job. An image that expresses your style may be seen through the clothes you wear, the car you drive and the personality you display.
Client availability dictates you will often work long and irregular hours.
