As an interpreter you generally do not work for an employer but have your own business.
The Commonwealth and the States have entities which implement multicultural policies. They are the main employers of interpreters. In addition, there are a large number of interpreting agencies which act as the contact between the client and the interpreter. Most clients go to an agency when they need an interpreter. The agency then finds the interpreter.
Environment & Culture
Interpreting is an indoors occupation. You become aware of private information that you have to keep confidential. Community Interpreters work alone, Court Interpreters may work as a pair, while Conference Interpreters and UN Interpreters work as part of a team. Community interpreting does not rank very highly in Australia as you would usually work with immigrants or refugees and the pay is generally not very good.
Work is paid by the hour, but travel time is not included. Court work pays better, and conference work pays very well.
