This is an ideal career for analytical thinkers. An IT Systems Engineer focuses on providing technical support, consulting and expertise to businesses. Roles within the industry, tend to start at a lower technical level and gradually increase based on skill, knowledge and ability to address technical and non-technical problems and communicate their resolution, especially to non-technical people.

Qualifications, leading Universities and Employment

Qualifications in the IT industry do offer a very good grounding, developing knowledge, best practices and understanding. Unlike most other industries, the most renowned qualifications are not from university. The systems in which you will be working tend to change and adapt very quickly, and mostly are developed by proprietary vendors IT companies), who offer up-to-date training and certification for their products. For example: To support a Microsoft based IT system, an employer would be more inclined to seek a person with Microsoft systems qualifications to fill their role. Vendor training courses and certification are available through corporate training organisations in all Australian capital cities.

There are many vendor certification programs available, with qualifications including the following:

  • Microsoft Certified Information Technology Professional (formerly MCSE).
  • Cisco Certified Network Engineer (CCNA)
  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP)
  • Citrix Certified Administrator (CCA)

These qualifications tend to follow an intensive training course, and offer the best knowledge and key insight into the technical requirements of an IT System Engineer. Employers hold these qualifications in great esteem as they reference directly to the desired skill-set of somebody filling an IT System Engineer role.
