Leading Companies & Markets
As an applied mathematician, you can find employment in a range of areas. Popular markets include engineering, economics, commerce, industry, technology, science, social science, education, business, and politics.
Basically, in any field that requires mathematical problem solving or research, you will find career opportunities. Public sector careers with the Defence Force, CSIRO, the economics departments of both State and Federal Governments and water, electrical and energy companies. In industry, the insurance companies, finance companies and medical companies offer employment opportunities.
A theoretical mathematician’s employment opportunities are more limited. As this area of mathematics is not as common or high in demand, a large percentage of theoretical mathematicians find employment within universities. The universities will generally offer you a place to conduct your research and theoretical endeavours, while also teaching mathematics to students.
Environment & Culture
For the most part, mathematicians are based in offices, following a standard 9am-5pm work day. You will be using computers and other mathematical equipment. Depending on the purpose of your work, you will often work with specialists from other disciplines, such as statisticians, engineers, biologists, computer scientists, economists, or botanists. You may be part of a cross functional team.
