Leading Companies & Markets
The three main areas of meteorology are forecasting, research and consulting. If you are involved in the weather forecasting side, then you may find employment at a regional forecasting centre. After completing the nine-month training course at the Bureau of Meteorology, you may receive a position in any Australian capital city.
If you are interested in the research side of meteorology, then most positions are to be found in Melbourne at the Head Office of the Bureau of Meteorology. There are a limited number of positions available and consequently the competition is quite fierce. The universities, CSIRO and environmental organisations also provide limited employment opportunities.
You can also work in the private sector, employed as a climate consultant. For instance, you may find work researching the typical weather conditions for a region as a part of an overall larger environmental project.
Environment & Culture
Constant advancements in technology mean the work you undertake can now be done entirely from a workstation. Meteorologists who work in weather forecasting tend to work in teams and shifts. The hours range from early morning to late at night, so a nine-to-five job is very unlikely. The work is demanding intellectually, is driven by deadlines and is not without pressure.
Technology surrounds you. Your colleagues are high intellect people and forecast accuracy is expected.
