This is an ideal career for analytical and logical thinkers. The job of a Naturopath is to use traditional medicine to treat sickness and encourage general wellbeing in patients, instead of offering surgery or drugs which can often suppress symptoms. You specialise in remedies such as lifestyle advice or herbal alternatives.

Leading Companies & Markets

As naturopathy is still straining for full recognition by the government as a medicinal practice, the profession currently does not meet the demands of a mainstream market. Your treatments tend to influence those with similar holistic beliefs, and people who claim to have tried everything else with no success. This smaller market encourages Naturopaths to work in private clinics or undertake self-employment, instead of forming large practices.

The leading associations are Australian Natural Therapists Association, Complementary Medicine Association and Australian Traditional Medicine Society. Their power lies in their authority to issue practitioner-only products to members, and regulate those with membership by considering the individual’s qualifications.

Environment & Culture

Naturopaths tend to work in private clinics or are self-employed. However, as the reputation of traditional medicine has grown, you will often find resident naturopaths in health and natural food stores, and in a growing number of pharmacies.
