This is an ideal career for visionary and creative thinkers. Naval architects are designers of ship structures, hulls, and compartments as well as floating structures. You work closely with equipment engineers and ship or boat builders to ensure that the craft functions efficiently and that its overall system is sound. You could be designing a variety of craft including naval craft, passenger and cargo ships, submarines, tugs, boats, yachts, high-speed ferries and catamarans.

Education & Qualifications

If you are interested in becoming a Naval Architect in any particular field, you will be required to have appropriate tertiary qualifications and training. You will need to complete the four year full time undergraduate degree, Bachelor of Engineering, majoring in either Naval Architecture, Marine and Offshore Systems, Ocean Engineering, or Offshore Engineering - specialising in Naval Architecture.

Some of the universities offering a Bachelor of Engineering with any of the above majors are Tasmania University, University of New South Wales, and the University of Western Australia.

Since there are few specific tertiary courses in Naval Architecture, you may choose to major in marine enigneering, ocean engineering, or mechanical engineering instead. You can apply for membership of Engineers Australia. Careernav recommends you take advantage of the career guidance offered by the Australian Division of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA). Membership is free.

The entry criteria for tertiary institiutions differs from year to year. The above comments are a guide only. To gain specific entry criteria either contact the relevant university or use Hobson's The Good University Guide.
