Qualifications and leading Universities
To become a nurse you will need to complete the relevant qualifications.
To become a Registered Nurse Division 2, you can complete a Certificate 4 in Nursing at TAFE or another learning institution. To become a Registered Nurse Division 1 or a Midwife, you will need to attend university and undertake a Bachelor of Nursing or a Bachelor of Midwifery. It is possible to take both in a double degree.
Only Division 1 nurses can continue their studies to become a midwife. Division 2 nurses may use their Certificate 4 as credit to transfer to a university and complete a Bachelor of Nursing, or enter directly into a Bachelor of Midwifery.
To be able to qualify for degree courses you will need to pass Year 12. Prerequisites include the following subjects – English, biology, mathematics, chemistry, psychology, and physics.
Many universities offer nursing degree courses, which involve three years’ full-time study. Each has its own prerequisites for entry. Entry scores vary from a high of 85+ for Curtin University (W.A.), through 75+ (Flinders University, Monash University, Queensland University of Technology, University of South Australia, and University of Technology Sydney) to 70+ (The Australian Catholic University, Deakin University, Melbourne University, Murdoch University, Queensland University, Wollongong University, and La Trobe University)
You will also need to complete a first aid certificate course, which must be continually updated throughout your career as a nurse or midwife.
If you wish to become a nurse practitioner, then you will need to undertake further study to Masters level.
