This is an ideal career for analytical and logical thinkers. As a nurse, you assess and care for patients, providing a medical plan for preventative, rehabilitative or curative purposes. You may work in a range of environments, including hospitals, nursing homes, specialist units, community facilities and patients’ homes. Nurses administer medications, redress wounds, and help prepare patients for surgery.

Environment and Culture of the workplace

Nurses generally work in large hospitals, nursing homes or rehabilitation centres. These facilities have many different people in charge of each ward, altering depending on the roster. The environment is always sterile, neat and ordered. Other nursing environments, such as community nursing and remote nursing, may operate less rigidly due to location and type of nursing.

Appearance is very important in health facilities, so a certain standard of personal presentation and fastidious hygiene is expected. You will need to have a caring nature and be confident that the care you are providing is the best for the patient. As the occasion demands you will need to act swiftly and be decisive. Nursing can at times be emotionally draining and demanding.
