This is an ideal career for creative thinkers. As a painter and decorator you apply finishes to interior and exterior surfaces for both domestic and commercial buildings as well as other structures. You will use such finishes as paint, wallpaper or varnishes using a range of different techniques to apply to surfaces to achieve many different looks.

Typical accountabilities and responsibilities

1st Year

To attend all classes at training organisation. Follow instructions on job sites. Clean tools and materials used throughout the day.

2nd Year

As above. More hands on, learning how to measure and calculate the correct amounts of materials required, all while being supervised

3rd Year

Will apply finishes to surfaces from paint to wallpaper or other materials. All above as well.
4th Year You are thoroughly experienced in regards to painting and decorating. You will be able to quote for jobs, order materials and supplies. Possible supervision of less experienced employees on sites.

Career Path Options and Employment opportunities

As a qualified painter and decorator you can continue to work for one employer; you can find employment with contracting firms that offer painting and decorating services; or you may also choose to establish your own business, for which you will have to advertise and find your own jobs. You may choose to specialise in one market sector such as commercial buildings, residential buildings or industrial buildings. There is also the possibility to work for local councils, government agencies, or housing companies.

With further experience you can enter into the field of technical teaching or take advantage of opportunities in sales and marketing, working for the manufacturers of painting products. Many of those employed within these wholesale companies have backgrounds in painting and decorating.
