Description

This is an ideal career for creative and logical thinkers. A plasterer will hang plaster sheets or apply special cement products to the interior or exterior of commercial or residential properties. They also put up decorative pieces such as ceiling roses, fancy cornices, or strapping.

What you do every day

As a plasterer, you will measure the walls and ceilings of a new job to be able to work out the quantities of materials that are required. A quote including value of materials and cost of labour required is submitted to the client for approval.

For the job itself you will need to mix up a plaster mix to use on the joins between the plaster sheets, using a trowel to apply it. Once dry you will mix up a finishing mix of plaster and apply so you can have a smooth finish. Once this is done it will have to be sanded.

When you are required to work at large heights you will have to erect scaffolding to ensure your safety and that of those working on site with you. Plasterers generally work in teams of three or more people.

Personality that best fit this career

Being a plasterer you must enjoy working in practical areas. You will have good hand-eye coordination, a practical understanding of mathematics to be able to understand and read plans and specifications, whilst working in a logical way. You are also a creative thinking type person, giving you the ability to know how the finished product will look like.

You will have no fear of heights as at times you will have to work from scaffold or on ladders. Plastering is a very labour-intensive job, so you will be in good health and have the stamina to maintain your performance throughout the day.

Best thing about this career

Aside from helping to create something, a plasterer can be very well paid. If you have your own business you have the luxury of choosing your work hours and days. If you have specialised in a particular area and developed a reputation for excellence, people often request your services.

Worst thing about this career

There is downtime in plastering. You may turn up to a site and find it not yet ready to plaster even though you were told otherwise. The picking up and carrying of very heavy weights will play a toll on your body after some time.

The level of fitness required for plastering means it may be necessary in the longer term for a plasterer to seek another career, or at least work in a less active role such as estimating or managing a plastering business.
