Journalists write and edit news reports, commentaries and feature articles for newspapers, magazines and radio or television stations. As a journalist you tend to specialise in either broadcast journalism on television and radio, or print journalism for newspapers and magazines, though many journalists have done both.

Pros
  • Interesting news every day; the public listens to what you have to say
  • Meet important, powerful people
  • Flexibility of career direction
Cons
  • Research is often boring
  • Pressure of deadlines takes its toll
  • Entry-level employment is hard to find
The Bottom Line

Print journalism can be glamorous at times but more often not. It is interesting work, there are opportunities internationally, the tertiary qualifications are not too difficult and salary is above average. The cut and thrust of deadlines is not for everyone. It is often a pressurised job. Unless you burn out, it’s a blast!
