Quantity Surveyor

This is an ideal career for analytical and logical thinkers. Quantity surveyors are responsible for ensuring building developers get value for money through careful monitoring of a project cost from start to finish. You prepare cost estimates and cost plans, audit projects, manage construction costs and administer construction contracts and work on a range of projects including residential homes, industrial sites, commercial developments and transport networks.

Career Path Options

This career involves working with architects, building contractors, developers, engineers and project managers, on large scale office complexes, high density residential projects, hotels, or hospitals. The individual is either a self employed consultant or part of a small or medium sized firm. Some work as academics in universities, or within the government sector . Progress to managerial positions in the construction industry is possible as experience is gained. Job prospects can fluctuate depending on the level of building activity.
