Qualifications & Leading Universities
You will have passed your Year 12 with English and probably high scores in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. You need to complete an undergraduate degree preferably a Bachelor of Science with a major in Medical Imaging Science, which is usually a four year full time course. Monash University has a specialist Bachelor of Radiography and Medical Imaging, University of South Australia offers a Bachelor of Medical Radiation whilst University of Technology Queensland, the University of Sydney and Victoria University all offer Bachelor of Science degrees with majors relating to Radiography. These courses place a great importance on physics and anatomy.
Graduates then need to complete one year of clinical practice in an accredited radiology department then apply for membership of the Australian Institute of Radiography (AIR). The AIR offers members the latest information in the radiography field, the chance to build strong professional alliances to help enhance your career, opportunities to shape government regulations that may directly impact your industry, and so on. It is compulsory to obtain a license to practice from the relevant state Registration Board. A first aid qualification and criminal background check are also required before undertaking clinical placements.
