Education Qualifications
A Bachelor of Social Work or Master of Social Work (Qualifying) degree is the minimum requirement to qualify for a job as a social worker in Australia. All social work education involves a field education component, where you will be able to put into practice the concepts you are learning at university. University teaching positions and most research appointments normally require a Doctorate. Employment is projected to grow faster than average. Competition for jobs is expected in cities, but opportunities in rural areas will continue to grow.
There is no mandatory legal registration for social workers in any Australian state or territory. However, the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) is the professional body that sets standards for social work and many jobs will require eligibility for membership of AASW. Completion of an AASW accredited Bachelor of Social Work degree and also an AASW accredited Master of Social Work (Qualifying) automatically confers eligibility for membership of AASW.
