This is an ideal career for analytical thinkers. A solicitor has a wide range of duties and responsibilities. In most instances, a solicitor is engaged by a client to advise on legal aspects of a matter. This may require the solicitor to draft letters of advice, represent their client in court, conduct negotiations, undertake extensive legal research or draft/ review legal agreements on a client’s behalf.

Qualifications & Leading Universities

In order to practice as a solicitor you will need to firstly obtain a Bachelor of Laws (LLB). Although entrance requirements vary from university to university, gaining entry into law school is tough and usually requires entrance scores in the high 90’s. An LLB is a 5 year (full time) course, which may be taken on its own or combined with another degree such as commerce, business or arts.

A law degree may also be useful for gaining entrance into either a second undergraduate degree or into another industry such as accounting, finance or the public service.

The most difficult universities to gain entry to include: University of Sydney, University of New South Wales and Macquarie University in NSW; Monash University and the University of Melbourne in Victoria; Griffith University and Queensland University in Queensland and the University of Adelaide in South Australia.

When you obtain your LLB, you must undertake practical legal training before you are qualified to practise as a lawyer. In Victoria, this practical training can take the form of a traineeship during which you work under the supervision of a fully qualified solicitor for twelve months.

You may also choose to complete a practical legal training (PLT) course offered either as an on-campus course or online. PLT courses are offered through the Leo Cussen Institute, and the College of Law in a joint partnership with the Law Institute of Victoria and the College of Law in NSW. Such courses are offered at other institutions including Australian National University.  PLT courses are fee-paying (i.e. government assistance is not available to students doing the course). Online courses generally involve a work placement component and have the advantage of flexible starting dates.

The entry criteria for tertiary institiutions differs from year to year. The above comments are a guide only. To gain specific entry criteria either contact the relevant university or use Hobson's The Good University Guide.

Relevant Universities Colleges & TAFE

Careernav have trolled through all the universities, specialist colleges and TAFE’s across the nation to identify those courses we consider relevant to this career. We have only focussed on the core single degree and its full time period. We acknowledge many combination degrees are available and different students combine different degrees. Course names also differ by university and we have grouped like courses together. We may have missed the odd course being offered, so we recommend for a more detailed guide check with the universities direct or one of the university course guide books such as Hobson’s. Please note Careernav are totally impartial and do not recommend one tertiary institution over another. To view the A to Z of tertiary institutions that offer relevant courses for this career.

Promoting Tertiary Institutions

All tertiary institutions have an open invitation to make available their course outline using the ‘For Institutions’ tab in the footer section of each page. From time to time universities, colleges or TAFE will take up Careernav’s offer to promote their courses and make available ‘Course Outline’ for your consideration. When an icon appears, consider its relevance and download the Course Outline on the one that interests you by clicking “I would like to learn more” at the end of the course profile.

Our Privacy Policy confirms your contact details including your email address will remain in the strictest of confidence. If you would like your email details provided to selected tertiary institutions to talk further about the course you need to click the checkbox. Only then will Careernav invite the tertiary institution to accept your email address and facilitate contact between you and them.
