This is an ideal career for analytical thinkers. A solicitor has a wide range of duties and responsibilities. In most instances, a solicitor is engaged by a client to advise on legal aspects of a matter. This may require the solicitor to draft letters of advice, represent their client in court, conduct negotiations, undertake extensive legal research or draft/ review legal agreements on a client’s behalf.

Environment & Culture of the Workplace

A solicitor is often required to work long hours and the work is primarily undertaken in the office. However, solicitors may attend barrister’s chambers, court or negotiations/mediations which are conducted outside of the office.

Some argue that outdated chauvinistic traditions and opinions still exist within the legal profession; however this is certainly not the experience of all solicitors.

Depending on the area in which you specialise, it may be necessary for you to work outside the regular hours of business. As a criminal lawyer, for example, you may find yourself attending a police station in the middle of the night. You may have to make yourself available to your client all hours of the day and night. As a result of the long hours and the tasks undertaken on a daily basis, the job can be very stressful. However, for many solicitors, the feeling of accomplishment when a legal matter is resolved is very rewarding.
