This is an ideal career for creative thinkers. A sound engineer will use technical equipment to be able to amplify, enhance and reproduce sound for performing arts, and at times record sounds. They will also at times have to set up and assemble sound equipment, remembering to maintain all equipment to be used. 

What you do every day 

Each day a sound engineer will have to set up and operate any required equipment, after determining the sound requirements of the event or production that you are working on. As part of your working routine you will regularly check, service and maintain all equipment that is used. You will communicate with performers, instructing them on the use of microphones and conducting sound checks. With experience you will be able to operate the controls whereby you will maintain the correct sound levels for each production, as well as introducing any pre-recorded sound effects that each production may require. 

Personality that best fits this occupation 

As a sound engineer you will need to have a good ear in all areas of sound. Your knowledge of computers and audio equipment will be of the highest standard. You will have good communication and creative thinking skills along with a friendly disposition and the ability to work under pressure when required. You will also pay high attention to detail when working. 

Best thing about this career 

You have the satisfaction of knowing that you have helped to create the finished product of a show, television show, film, or radio. You get to know those who are musicians and the producers, working alongside both, helping them in the creation of sounds they require. 

Worst thing about this career 

Sound technicians often work shift hours, with the possibility of working long hours not only during the week but also on weekends. If you are working on outdoor concerts you also have to deal with any weather condition present at the time.
