Qualifications & Leading Universities
If you are considering a career in teaching, get as much real-life experience working with children as possible. Volunteer opportunities, such as tutoring or working in school holiday camps are excellent ways to help you develop the skills that you will need, gain experience and help understand your future career. A teaching situation in a church or community education group is a great trial run to see if you’re made of ‘the right stuff’.
Prerequisite subjects for university depend on the subjects that you expect to teach. English and a mathematical subject are required. You will need to study a Bachelor of Education or Bachelor of Teaching which is a four year full time course offered by most universities
The course combines the teaching and subject components. Another way in is by completing an undergraduate degree in a related subject area (usually arts, science or commerce) followed by a Graduate Diploma in Education for one year. You can also enter teaching after completing a trade qualification, working in your trade for some years and completing a Graduate Diploma in Education.
Those universities requiring the highest entry score of 75 include Sydney University, University of New South Wales, Macquarie University, University of Technology Sydney and Wollongong University in NSW; Curtin and Murdoch University in West Australia, Queensland University and Central Queensland University in Queensland and the University of South Australia. In Melbourne, Deakin University and Monash University need an entry score above 70.
Getting post graduate qualifications in education can also prepare you for other jobs such as administration, research and policy making or teaching in a specialist area. A post graduate qualification (Graduate Diploma or Masters) is required for teaching in the area of Special Education.
Most states require teachers to be registered in that state. Most states also require a Working with Children Check.
