Education is the responsibility of both the Federal and State governments. Government schools dominate with about 65% of the total student population. Independent schools enrol about 14% of students and the remainder attend Catholic schools.
Environment & Culture of the Workplace
Specialist teachers such as woodwork, metalwork, home economics, music usually stay in the one room and if you’re the PE teacher you are outdoors most of the day. You may use computers, videos, DVDs and other technology as well as textbooks as teaching aids. Classrooms may not be air conditioned.
Special education teachers may work in stand alone schools or within the mainstream school system. Independent and catholic schools also provide supported and alternative education for students with special needs. Special schools generally offer small class sizes to maximise individual attention and assistance for each student.
Private schools generally have higher quality facilities than government schools and student to teacher ratios are usually lower. Teachers are well thought of and respected by the community, although much effort can go unappreciated. There will be days of joy and days of despair. Kids will be kids.
