What you do every day
On a typical day a travel consultant will deal with a number of prospective travel customers, who will be at different stages of their travel arrangements, from choosing a destination to final ticketing and payment. As well as dealing with customers, you spend considerable time on the telephone or on line, dealing with suppliers of travel, accommodation and other holiday services. At the early planning stage you supply customers with brochures and information on the type of travel they are requesting, and discusses different options and sale destinations available at that specific time. Once the customer has booked a holiday they will be given their itinerary and any necessary tickets and vouchers for their travel arrangements. Good communication and attention to customer relations with existing and future potential clients is essential in building reputation and business needs within an always changing and varying industry.

Those who are interested in a career in travel consultancy will have to have excellent communication skills. You will need to be computer literate, as all your work will mainly be computer driven. At times you may have to work under pressure maintaining a strong focus on sales at the same time. Appearances are very important and a certain standard of personal presentation is expected at all times. You will also need to be a visionary thinker, as you will create many holiday dreams for many clients.

The best thing about being a travel consultant is the ability to travel extensively. You will get to experience many different holiday destinations. You can and should share your travel experience with clients, informing them of your favourite places.
Worst thing about this career
Travel consultants will work long hours throughout the week which would include weekends. Many agencies will have their consultants working on a commission basis, so the more travel tours you sell the more money you are able to earn.
