This is an ideal career for visionary thinkers. Urban and regional planners specialise in the development and re-development of existing towns, cities and rural areas. You plan for the future growth of regions, urban areas, industrial and commercial estates, recreation areas and open space. You work on projects to ensure the optimum relationship with the surrounding environment. In doing so, you improve the quality of life of people and aim to have safe, healthy, efficient and aesthetically pleasing environments.

Qualifications & Leading Universities

If you are interested in becoming an urban and regional planner, you will need to complete an undergraduate degree. Relevant degrees include a Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning, Bachelor of Environmental Planning, Bachelor of Development Studies, Bachelor of Urban Development, and a Bachelor of Planning or Bachelor of Science with majors in Urban Planning and Development. These courses range from three to five years.

Postgraduate study in a Master of Urban and Regional Planning will assist you in finding employment in the field. To be eligible for corporate membership of the Planning Institute of Australia, you must complete a 4 year degree.

Universities with the highest entry score of 85+ for a Bachelor of Planning or Environmental Planning degree are Griffith University and James Cook University in Queensland. Universities that require an entrance score of 75+ to undertake a relevant degree include: the University of Melbourne, Queensland University of Technology, University of New South Wales, and University of Western Australia.

Universities with relevant courses and lower entry scores are Curtin University of Technology, Edith Cowan University, La Trobe University, University of Newcastle, RMIT University and the University of South Australia.
